Initiatives
BSC is concerned
about our environment and as such has a number of
policies in place to be sure we do our part as a good corporate
citizen.
Re-cycling
 Being in the business of selling
computer goods, we generate a considerable amount of cardboard
packaging material. All cardboard is discarded in a special
cardboard bin which is taken away to a re-cycling facility.
Another bi-product of the computer business is end of life computer
components and network equipment. Where components are still
useable, we sometimes assemble computer systems to be donated to
needy families. Otherwise, we ensure that these items are taken to
Brampton’s electronic goods recycling facility on Chrysler Drive.
Each BSC employee has a paper recycling bin by their desk so that
any waste paper is recycled rather than ending up in a landfill.
Shredded paper is likewise recycled. Of course wherever possible, we
try to go paperless and opt instead for electronic documentation.
Saving Trees
Wherever accepted by our
customers, BSC has for some time delivered invoices, statements and
case results via email rather than printing and mailing them.
Refurbished Print
Cartridges
BSC purchases and offers to our
customers, refurbished toner cartridges for a variety of HP,
Brother, Samsung and Canon Printers. Making the "Green"
choice in this case also saves money.
Power Consumption
With the server virtualization
technology now available, it is possible to consolidate multiple
server systems onto one physical server. Reducing the number of
physical servers reduces overall power consumption. To date, BSC has
reduced our internal use physical server count by 30% with plans to
eliminate a further 30% of our physical servers.
 Throughout our offices, BSC has installed motion activated lighting
so that lights turn off when not needed.
Our heating system is regulated by a set-back thermostat so that the
temperature drops in the evenings and on weekends when no staff are
present.
Reduction of Gasoline
Emissions
Through the use of remote
monitoring software and remote control equipment (IP KVM’s and Power
Distribution Units), BSC has reduced the number of on-site visits
required to service our client computer networks, thereby reducing
gasoline consumption.
Video Surveillance cameras installed at our office eliminate the
need to drive to the office for after hours false alarms. Through
remote viewing of the cameras, we can determine if any unauthorized
persons are inside or outside.
Paint Fumes
Before moving into our new office
location, the entire space was painted. We opted for the more
expensive, but healthier low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint
now available, with minimal toxic emissions and no odour.
